Mobile patrol or on-site security guard: which does your site need?

Mobile patrol or an on-site security guard? How Calgary property managers and businesses can choose the right coverage, and when to combine the two.

It is one of the first questions property managers and business owners ask us: do I need a security guard on site, or will a mobile patrol do? The honest answer depends on your site, its risks and the hours you need covered.

What an on-site guard gives you

An on-site guard stays at your property for the full shift. That constant presence suits sites where people come and go all day or night and someone needs to manage them:

  • Lobbies, loading docks and parkades that need access control
  • Retail stores and 24-hour locations where staff deal with the public
  • Construction sites holding high-value materials overnight
  • Events and venues with crowds to screen and manage

What mobile patrol gives you

A mobile patrol officer visits your property several times a shift, inspects it, responds to alarms and files a report after every visit. Patrol costs less than a full-time guard and suits sites that need visible deterrence more than a constant presence:

  • Business parks and industrial yards after hours
  • Construction sites between shifts
  • Townhouse and low-rise residential complexes
  • Several smaller properties on one route

Good patrols are randomized. Predictable visit times are easy to work around, so patrol schedules should change from night to night.

When to combine them

Many sites use both: a guard during busy hours and mobile patrol overnight, or a guard at the main entrance with patrols covering the perimeter. Combining coverage lets you put the budget where the risk actually is.

How we decide with you

Every Barry Enterprises assignment starts with a site assessment. We look at the property, its history of incidents and the hours you need covered, then recommend the coverage that fits and put it in written post orders. You get time-stamped reports either way.
